Hozier, "Take Me To Church"
My name is S. Victoria Nakamun, and I'm a self published author based in Edmonton, Alberta. The above quote strongly applies to the queer experience and issues I explore using my own experiences as a young queer woman through my work, so join me as I traverse the wide and wonderful world of fantasy storytelling!
I've been imagining and creating stories for as long as I've been able to hold a pencil- my first short story was written on the back of my elementary choir's sheet music. There's nothing I'd rather do more than create magical worlds, draft insane ideas, or create badass characters, and find a way to tell a meaningful story with them.
I'm currently in my fourth year of an undergraduate BSc degree in Psychology and Biological Sciences (also known as my day job). There's something about the mind and the way it works that fascinates me, or maybe I'm just looking to psychoanalyze my crazy family (their words, not mine).
I'm an author by day, author by night, with a few other features sprinkled between. I love films, hiking, gaming (PC, of course), and strive to show my two cats that they can do anything they set their mind to.
There isn't nearly enough queer and lesbian representation in fantasy stories, and I wish to change that one series at a time. There's nothing better than falling in love with queer love in fantasy stories.
The current state of our world elicits feelings of uncertainty and hopelessness , especially in my generation. I often use fantasy settings to express these concerns in a way that brings hope for a better future within the chaos.
Using my own experiences with painful and toxic relationships, I often explore the struggles of learning to let go of people you love, but can't continue your life with.
When a person, institution, or trauma leaves you empty, how does one rebuild themselves from the ground up?
The struggle, joy and beauty of learning about yourself, at any age, is a journey I love to put my characters on!
The grief we face when we lose someone is often insurmountable, to the point where loving someone else in the same way can seem impossible. That's why I love those kinds of stories-- the beauty of that brilliant leap of faith is always a fun arch to explore.
As a person who has struggled with perfectionism my whole life, I love creating characters that must learn to accept their faults and love themselves anyways.
